Deposit Return Scheme
What it is and how it works
Across Europe and in many countries around the world, specific regulations govern Deposit Return Schemes (DRS). When purchasing a beverage container, such as a plastic bottle, can or glass bottle, the consumer pays a deposit at the point of purchase, which can range from €0.02 to €0.25 per item. The deposit is refunded when the consumer returns the empty container to a designated return point, usually at a supermarket. These locations are equipped with reverse vending machines (RVMs), which accept plastic bottles as well as cans and glass containers. Once the machine has accurately identified the returned container, it provides the corresponding deposit refund, usually in the form of a voucher or receipt.
